“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~Winston Churchill

Recently, I did something I thought had passed me by.  It’s something I often pondered about but with the busy-ness of life, and the little questions in the back of my mind, I convinced myself I had done my time.  I was wrong. All the fears I accumulated over time was nothing but a cavern of deception.  So I pulled together my best suit, cap and goggles, and joined a Masters Swim Team.  As a competitive swimmer from the age of five to twenty two, I wasn’t sure I could pull this fifty one year old body together enough to swim a practice beginning to end.  I was pleasantly surprised when I touched the wall at the end of my 100th length.  Not only did I feel an accomplishment, I felt like I had returned home.

Anything we do in life never has to end.  If it’s something that has brought you joy in the past there’s no reason it can’t be added to your present.  Often, I ask my clients what they do for themselves that brings them happiness. More often than not, the answer is, “I don’t know.”  That’s when I direct them to reach deep down into their bellies and recall what they loved or dreamed of as a child.  That’s when their face lights up and they begin to remember all they have shoved down to meet the responsibilities of others.  Given the choice to rediscover your successes in life, what courageous journey would you embark upon?

I know many, and I will. Allow your heart to search, you will too.

Three days until the Olympics opening ceremony. My bag is packed and we’re walking together as a family from car park to ticket gate. Something is not quite right. I’m riding a tsunami-size mania and set to wipe out in awesome and truly awful style. Now, if this tale is not weird enough already, then try this: in my mind I have become Jesus Christ reincarnate. I am experiencing a high I’d imagine you attain only on the strongest drugs.’

Read more extracts from Broken Open….

In a remarkable memoir ABC broadcaster Craig Hamilton tells what it’s like to go mad in public and survive to tell the tale. Hamilton explores how his breakdown and diagnosis of bipolar disorder affected his family, work colleagues and friends. In doing so he lifts the covers on the taboo subject of depression and shows how he stared down his demons to resurrect his life and career.

As a former top sportsman, farmer’s son and coal miner who reinvented himself to establish a successful career with the ABC, Craig believed he was immune to a calamity such as mental illness. From his initial shocking breakdown to his eventual recovery, Craig retraces his steps and highlights the warning signs that might have told him he was in serious trouble.

Broken Open is a gripping read about one man’s journey back from the brink of hell. But it is much more than that. It’s also a personal plea for society to shake off the stigma surrounding people with depression and to bring the subject out into the clear light of day.

“I know Craig went through his own anguish with mental illness and if it can affect him it can affect anybody. I hold him in high esteem as I believe him to be very credible and someone who has a real passion for what he does, particularly calling rugby league on ABC Radio.

Like many Australians today, Craig changed his life so he could manage his illness. Through medication and a healthy lifestyle of yoga, meditation and laughter he is now living a healthy life. His story is a must-read. His triumph is truly remarkable and will inspire anyone lucky enough to read it.

Sadly many people suffering mental illness do not have the strength or support to change their lives. Like Craig I have watched players and have friends and family who have suffered from mental illness. I know through these experiences that mental illness exists and is not in someone’s imagination as we are often told.

By telling his story I know Craig will help others who have suffered, but more importantly he makes us all much more aware of the presence of mental illness, and in particular depression and bipolar disorder.”

Help, Hope & Healing; Mia Inspired! with Pam Brooks-Crump

Tune in to Help, Hope & Healing, WWLZ820am, Saturday, May 14th, 12-1pm EST.  My guest will be Pam Brooks-Crump, author of Mia Inspired! A Caterpillar at a Crossroad.  Join Pam and I as we discuss life’s stages, changes, and listening to your Inner Guidance.  As always, calls are welcome during the show at 607-732-4820 or 1-866-732-4820.

Pam’s Story….

In 2008, I was at a place of confusion and uncertainty about what I wanted to do outside of being a mom, I asked for Inner Guidance and I received a message to “Illustrate the book!”  This sounded familiar because five-years previous, I had heard the exact same message!  My response at that time was, “Wrong number, call back another time!“  However, when I heard it so clearly for the 2nd time, I summoned my courage like Mia does, and decided to trust my Inner Guidance.  We could have called the book “Pam Inspired!”, but that just didn’t have the same ring as “Mia”, since she is a magnificent Monarch!  My Inner Guidance knew something that I did not know, that drawing and painting would bring so much joy to my life!  I have been a writer for many, many years in the form of journaling my private writings.  However, “Mia Inspired!” is my first published book.  The writing of ‘Mia” was such an easy flow for me, it was as if I was taking dictation from my Inner Source.

I have always had a love for foreign languages and cultures.  I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983 with a Bachelor’s Degree in French which included a study abroad program in Paris, France.  I continued my studies and obtained a Masters in International Finance from Thunderbird, The Garbon School of International Management, Glendale AZ. which included two additional abroad programs, again in Paris and in Guadalajara, Mexico. The time I spent abroad is invaluable to me expanding my horizons, and it was in Mexico that I experienced the migration of the Monarch butterfly (read “Mia Inspired!: for more on this amazing journey)!

I worked in International Banking for 3 years in New York City followed by a short career as a real estate agent there in the city.  In 1992, I began my career as a fulltime mother, and it was not until 2008 after seeking Inner Guidance that I was led to my current work of writing and illustrating children’s picture books.  I currently live in Marietta, Georgia with my husband and 3 children.
